You can raise or lower your server's RAM at any time from the client area at guavahost.com/account, and GuavaHost prorates the change so you only pay for what you actually use.
Why you might change your RAM
Every GuavaHost plan is fully configurable, which means RAM is not fixed for the life of the server. Ramp it up when your player count grows, when you add heavy mods or plugins, or when the Console starts warning about memory. Ramp it down when a wipe empties the server out or a modpack turns out lighter than expected. You are never locked into the amount you picked at checkout.
How much RAM do you need
There is no single right number; it depends on your game, your mods, and how many players you host. As a rule of thumb, more mods and more players need more RAM. If your server is stuttering, lagging, or crashing on start, that is usually a sign to add memory. If it never climbs anywhere near its limit, which you can watch in the panel, you can safely trim it.
How to change your RAM
- Log in at guavahost.com/account.
- Open Services and then My Services, and click the server you want to change.
- Look for the Upgrade/Downgrade option in the management actions.
- Choose your new RAM amount from the configurable options.
- Review the prorated invoice that is generated, then pay it for an upgrade or confirm the credit for a downgrade.
- The new RAM applies to your server, which will restart to pick up the change.
Your files, worlds, and settings stay exactly where they are; only the memory ceiling moves.
What prorated means
Prorated simply means you are charged for the difference based on the time left in your current billing period, not a whole new month. If you upgrade halfway through the month, you pay roughly half the difference now, and your regular renewal reflects the new amount from then on. Downgrades work the same way in reverse, often leaving a small credit on your account toward your next invoice.
Downgrading safely
Dropping RAM is easy, but make sure your game actually fits in the smaller amount first:
- Take a snapshot on the Backups tab before you change anything.
- Check that your modpack or plugin set runs within the lower limit, since too little RAM can cause slow starts or crashes.
- Watch the Console after the restart to confirm the server boots cleanly.
If it turns out you cut too far, just repeat the steps and go back up. Nothing is lost, and the billing re-prorates again.
Do you lose anything
No. Changing RAM does not wipe your world, reinstall your game, or reset your settings. It is purely a resource change, so your server comes back exactly as it was, just with more or less memory to work with.
