Performance & Lag

Fix lag on your game server: tell server lag from ping, read TPS and MSPT, tune view and simulation distance, size your RAM and pick a closer region.

  • Chunk loading, pre-generation and why exploring lags

Generating new terrain is the heaviest single job your server ever does, which is why a fresh world lags while players explore and then settles down: pre-generating the map ahead of time and capping it with a world border removes the problem for good.

  • How many plugins or mods is too many?

The count matters far less than what each one does, because what actually slows a server down is work on the main thread every tick: here is how to audit a plugin list and measure what one plugin really costs you.

  • Noisy neighbours and CPU steal on shared hosting

Your game server shares a physical machine with other servers, and sometimes people blame that for lag that is actually their own: here is how to tell the difference, what the panel graphs can and cannot show you, and what to send us if you think the machine is at fault.

  • Cut entity and mob lag on your server

Entities are the single most common cause of low TPS: every mob, dropped item and armor stand has to be updated on every tick, so counting them and capping the worst offenders is usually the fastest win available.

  • Changing your server location

Moving your server to a different location can cut your ping if you or most of your players are far from the current one. Here is what a move involves and how to start it yourself from the control panel.

  • Do More Players Need More RAM?

More players do use more RAM, but not as much as most people expect: the biggest memory costs are usually your world size, your mods or plugins, and your view distance, while each additional player adds a smaller, steadier amount on top.

  • Lag or ping? Telling server lag from latency

Two very different problems both get called "lag": the server struggling to keep up, and your own connection being slow. This guide shows you how to tell them apart so you fix the right thing.

  • Reading TPS and MSPT to Measure Server Health

TPS and MSPT are the two numbers that tell you whether your server is healthy: TPS is how many times per second the world updates (20 is perfect), and MSPT is how many milliseconds each update takes (under 50 is healthy).

  • View Distance vs Simulation Distance (and How They Affect TPS)

View distance controls how far players can see, simulation distance controls how far the world actually stays active and ticking, and both directly affect your server's TPS because each step outward adds more chunks for the server to process.

  • Why Is My Game Server Lagging? A Fix-It Checklist

Server lag usually comes down to a short list of causes: not enough RAM, too many loaded entities or heavy plugins, a distance setting turned up too high, or players sitting far from your server location, and you can work through each one in a few minutes.

About these guides

Lag is not one problem. A server that cannot keep up with its own simulation feels different from a connection that takes too long to reach it, and the fixes have nothing in common, so the first guide here is the one that tells the two apart. Get that wrong and you will buy RAM to fix a ping problem.

From there: TPS and MSPT are the numbers that say whether your server is healthy, view distance and simulation distance are the settings with the largest effect on them, entities are the usual culprit when neither explains it, and a closer region is the only real fix for distance. The checklist guide works through all of it in order if you would rather not guess.
