What actually uses RAM

In most game servers, memory is spent in roughly this order:

  • Loaded world chunks: the terrain currently kept in memory. This is often the single largest cost.
  • Mods and plugins: modpacks in particular can multiply your baseline memory need several times over.
  • Entities: mobs, dropped items, item frames, and farms.
  • Players: each connected player loads the area around them and adds a modest, predictable amount.

So yes, players cost RAM, but they are usually not the headline number. Ten players on a light vanilla server can use less memory than two players on a heavy modpack.

Why where players stand matters more than how many

Here is the part people miss. Players standing together in one town share the same loaded chunks, so five friends at spawn cost about the same as one. Players spread far across the map each load their own separate region of the world, and that is what really drives memory up. A server where everyone explores in different directions works far harder than one where everyone builds in the same valley.

This is also why your view distance setting multiplies the effect: a higher view distance means each spread-out player loads a larger area.

Rough guidance

Every game and modpack is different, so treat these as starting points, not rules:

  • Small vanilla or lightly plugged servers with a handful of players are comfortable on a modest amount of RAM.
  • Busy plugin servers and small modpacks want a healthy middle tier.
  • Large modpacks, big player counts, and sprawling maps benefit from the most RAM you can give them.

The honest test is your own resource graph and TPS, not a number from a forum post.

Signs you actually need more

  • Your RAM graph sits near the limit for long stretches.
  • TPS drops when the server is busiest, and recovers when players log off.
  • You see memory-related warnings in the Console tab.
  • Restarts help for a while, then lag creeps back.

If that sounds familiar, adding RAM is usually the right call. If your RAM is fine but TPS is still low, the problem is more likely entities, distance settings, or a heavy mod, so fix those first.
