Uploading a custom map to your Rust server

Run a custom map on your Rust server: host the .map file on Dropbox with a direct download link, then paste it into the Map URL field in Startup settings.

Custom maps are a great way to improve your Rust server and create a unique experience for your players. Follow the steps below carefully to ensure your map installs correctly.

1. Stop Your Server (IMPORTANT)

Before making any changes, you must stop your server.

  • Sign in to your control panel at customer.guavahost.com
  • Open My servers and click Manage on your Rust server
  • Click Stop at the top of the server page

Important: Never upload or change map settings while the server is running.

2. Upload Your Map File

Next, upload your custom Rust map file to a file hosting service. We recommend using Dropbox because it allows direct download links.

Steps:

  • Upload your .map file to Dropbox
  • Click Share
  • Generate a shareable link

3. Create a Direct Download Link (IMPORTANT)

Dropbox links must be modified so the server can download the file automatically.

A Dropbox share link ends in dl=0. Change it so your link ends in dl=1.

Example:

https://www.dropbox.com/s/example/mapname.map?dl=1

Important: If your link does not end in =1, the server will not download the map correctly.

4. Add the Map URL to Your Server

Now add the map link to your server settings:

Steps:

  • Open your Rust server in the control panel
  • Go to the Settings tab and scroll to Startup settings
  • Find the Map URL field
  • Paste your Dropbox direct download link
  • Click Save next to the field

5. Start Your Server

Once everything is set:

  • Check the Map URL is saved
  • Click Start at the top of the server page

The server will now automatically download and load your custom map on startup.

Done!

Your Rust server is now running your custom map.

If something goes wrong:

  • Confirm the link ends in =1
  • Make sure the file is public on Dropbox
  • Ensure the link is correctly pasted in the Map URL field
  • Remove old map files by wiping your server
