Rust shows the wrong country flag

So your server is in one region but the Rust server browser is flying a flag for somewhere else. It looks odd, but it is almost always just a cosmetic label, not a sign your server moved.

Where the flag actually comes from

The flag in the Rust server browser is not read from the physical location of the machine. It comes from a GeoIP lookup on the server's IP address. GeoIP means looking up an IP in a database that maps IP ranges to countries. Rust uses the MaxMind database for this.

Here is the catch. Hosting providers move IP blocks between locations over time, and those GeoIP databases lag behind the real world. So when an IP range gets reassigned to a new region, the database can still list the old country for a while. That is enough to make a server in, say, Sydney briefly show a different country's flag until the database catches up.

Your ping is completely unaffected

This is the important part. The flag is only a label looked up from a database. It has nothing to do with the actual network path between a player and your server. Ping is measured live, from the player straight to the real server, so it is completely unaffected by a wrong flag.

In other words, a server physically in Australia still gives Australian players their normal low ping, even if the browser stamps the wrong flag on it for a bit. Players connecting will get the real, correct latency regardless of what the little flag says.

What GuavaHost does about it

If an IP ever shows the wrong flag, we can submit a correction request to get the GeoIP data updated, or swap the server onto a different IP that geolocates correctly.

So if the flag looks off:

  • Confirm it is just the flag. Check that your ping and your players' pings are normal for your region. They almost certainly will be.
  • Note your server's IP, which is shown at the top of the server view in the panel.
  • Contact support on Discord and let us know the IP and what flag it is showing versus where the server should be.
  • We will look into the geolocation and either submit a correction or swap the IP if one is genuinely showing wrong.

No need to change anything on your end or panic that the server relocated. It did not.
