A Rust server's memory use scales hard with your map size and player count, so most servers want at least 6 GB of RAM and busy or large-map servers want a good deal more.
Why Rust needs so much RAM
Rust keeps the entire procedurally generated map and every entity on it in memory at once. Every base, wall, deployable, item and sleeping player is an entity, so as your map grows and your population builds more, memory use climbs steadily through a wipe cycle. That is why Rust is one of the more demanding games to host.
A rough RAM guide
Use these as starting points, then watch your real usage:
- Small map (around 3000) with up to ~30 players: about 5 to 6 GB
- Standard map (3500 to 4000) with ~50 players: about 7 to 8 GB
- Large map (4500) or higher population: about 10 to 12 GB
- Huge map (5000 to 6000) or a high-pop server past 150 players: 16 GB or more
Add extra headroom on top if you run Oxide or Carbon plugins, since each one uses memory of its own.
Map size is the biggest lever
server.worldsize affects RAM more than almost anything else. A bigger world does not just add ground, it adds monuments, roads, foliage and room for far more bases, and all of that lives in memory. If you are tight on RAM, trimming the world size is the fastest fix.
First boot uses more than normal
Generating the map on first boot, or after you roll the seed or size, is the most memory-hungry moment. It is also slower on big maps and can take a few minutes. Do not judge your steady-state needs by that first spike.
Watch your usage and upgrade if needed
You can see live memory use on the Console tab and your panel's resource graphs. Ways to reduce RAM use
- Lower server.worldsize
- Cap server.maxplayers closer to your real population
- Run fewer plugins
- Schedule a daily restart on the Schedules tab to clear memory creep between wipes
