World Names and Save Files on a Dragonwilds Server

The world name is both your save file and the thing your friends search for, so it is worth understanding before you change it.

One name, two jobs

World Name in Startup settings on your server's Settings tab does two things at once. The panel writes it into the game's config file as DefaultWorldName, which names the world created when the server first starts, and it is the text players type on the Public tab of the Worlds screen to find you. Search is case sensitive, so capitals matter. The field takes up to 20 characters.

Changing it

  1. Sign in at customer.guavahost.com, open My servers and click Manage on your Dragonwilds server.
  2. Go to the Settings tab, change World Name in Startup settings and click Save next to it.
  3. Press Restart at the top of the server page.

Change it in Startup settings rather than in DedicatedServer.ini. The panel writes the startup value into the file on every start, so an edit made only in the file does not last.

Be aware of what a change does. The name points at a save. Change it to a name that does not exist yet and the server generates a fresh world under the new name. Your old world is not deleted, it is simply not the one being loaded.

That is useful when you want a second world, and surprising when you only wanted a rename. If your intention is to rename an existing world rather than start a new one, take a backup first so you can get back to where you were.

Where the files live

Open the Files tab to see your server's own storage. The folders that matter:

  • RSDragonwilds/Saved/SaveGames/ holds your world saves.
  • RSDragonwilds/Saved/Config/LinuxServer/DedicatedServer.ini holds the server settings.

To keep a copy of a world on your own machine, download a backup from the Backups page, or connect over SFTP with the details under Connection details on the Settings tab and copy the SaveGames folder across (Uploading files with SFTP shows how). To bring a world in from somewhere else, stop the server first, then upload the save into SaveGames the same way, or open SaveGames on the Files tab and use Upload files there.

Keeping copies

The Backups page takes a full snapshot of the server, which includes every world on it. A snapshot before any big change, a new build, a boss attempt, or a settings edit, costs nothing and saves the evening. See Backing up and restoring a Dragonwilds world.

Two worlds, one server

The server names itself with Server Name across every world it runs, and the world name identifies each world. If you want to switch between two saves, set World Name in Startup settings to whichever you want loaded and restart. Both stay on disk.
