RuneScape: Dragonwilds DedicatedServer.ini Settings

Dragonwilds reads its settings from DedicatedServer.ini: owner, server name, world name, admin password and world password. Change them in Startup settings.

A RuneScape: Dragonwilds server reads its settings from DedicatedServer.ini, which holds five lines: OwnerId, ServerName, DefaultWorldName, AdminPassword and WorldPassword. Change them in Startup settings on your server's Settings tab, not in the file: the panel writes those five values into the file on every start, so a file-only edit is replaced. The file itself is on the Server properties page if you want to read it.

The settings that matter

Jagex's dedicated server guide describes five settings. Four are required, and your server is created with all of them filled in, but the placeholder values are not meant to be kept. Each one has a field in Startup settings:

Startup settings Line in DedicatedServer.ini What it does
Owner ID OwnerId Your in-game Player ID. Whoever it names is the owner. Starts as CHANGEME.
Server Name ServerName What the server calls itself across every world it runs. Up to 32 characters.
World Name DefaultWorldName The name of the world created when the server first starts, and the text your friends search for. Up to 20 characters.
Admin Password AdminPassword Unlocks the Server Management tab in the in-game pause menu. Starts as CHANGEME.
Server Password WorldPassword The password players enter to join. Starts as CHANGEME.

Jagex treats the world password as optional and allows it to be empty, but the panel requires a value for Server Password, so a Dragonwilds server here always has one. Setting a password on your Dragonwilds server covers what that means in practice, and Becoming admin on your Dragonwilds server shows where to find your Player ID.

Changing them

  1. Sign in at customer.guavahost.com, open My servers and click Manage on your Dragonwilds server.
  2. Go to the Settings tab and find Startup settings.
  3. Edit the value you want and click Save next to it.
  4. Press Restart at the top of the server page.

Each time the server starts, the panel writes these five values from Startup settings into DedicatedServer.ini. That is why Startup settings is the place to change them: if you edit one of these lines in the file instead, your edit is replaced with the startup value on the next start.

Looking at the file directly

The file is at RSDragonwilds/Saved/Config/LinuxServer/DedicatedServer.ini. The easiest way to see it is Server properties, under Game tools in the server menu: it opens this file as Server settings, one row per setting, with a search box. Change a value, click Save changes, then restart the server. You can also open the file on the Files tab to edit it as text, or connect over SFTP with the details under Connection details on the Settings tab if you would rather use an editor on your own machine (Uploading files with SFTP explains how).

The five settings above sit together in one section, which looks like this:

[/Script/Dominion.DedicatedServerSettings]
OwnerId=your-player-id
ServerName=My Server
DefaultWorldName=MyWorld
AdminPassword=something-private
WorldPassword=something-to-share

Jagex's guide documents only these five. If a future update adds more, they belong in the same file, and any line Startup settings does not manage stays as you wrote it. Three things to know before you edit:

  • The file is grouped into sections in square brackets. Keep a setting inside the section it came in, or the game will not see it.
  • Stop the server before you edit, then start it afterwards. The game reads the file at startup, and Unreal Engine games can write their config back when they shut down, which would undo an edit made while the server was running.
  • Leave the five managed lines alone and change them in Startup settings instead. Server properties lets you type into them, but the next start puts the startup values back.

If something goes wrong

If the server stops booting after an edit, the Console will usually say which line it could not read. Undo your change, or restore a backup from the Backups page, and try again, changing one thing at a time. Taking a backup before you edit is the cheapest insurance there is.
