Improve Hytale server performance

View distance, how spread out your players are and your mod list decide how a Hytale server runs, and lowering the view radius is free while a bigger plan is not.

A note on Early Access

Hytale is in Early Access, and server performance changes from update to update. Two servers with the same player count and the same plan can behave differently, and advice that was right last month can be wrong after a patch.

So treat the numbers here as starting points rather than promises. The method matters more than any single value: change one thing, watch how the server actually behaves with your group on it, and keep what helped.

Work out what kind of lag you have

  • Everyone stutters at once. The server is behind. The rest of this guide is for you.
  • One player stutters, nobody else does. That is their connection or their PC, and it follows them to other servers.
  • Everything responds late but smoothly. That is distance to the server rather than server load.

The Usage card on your server's Overview and Console tabs shows live CPU and RAM with a history chart. Watch it during a normal session. One thing to keep in mind when you read the RAM figure: Hytale runs on Java, and Java holds on to memory it has already reserved, so a server sitting near its limit is not automatically in trouble. What matters is whether it stays smooth.

View distance is the first lever, and it is free

The server's maximum view radius decides how much world has to be loaded around each player, and because the loaded area grows with the square of the radius, a small increase costs far more than it sounds like. It is set by MaxViewRadius in the config.json in your server's main folder, measured in chunks (square sections of the world).

  1. Open the Backups page and click Create backup.
  2. Press Stop at the top of the server page and wait for it to go fully offline.
  3. On the Files tab, open config.json in the server's main folder.
  4. Lower the MaxViewRadius number. Many owners settle around 12, and values above 16 get expensive quickly. Change only the number and leave every quote, comma and bracket where it is.
  5. Click Save and press Start.

Players can still choose a shorter view distance in their own settings, but the server's value is the ceiling, so this is the one that controls cost. View distance versus simulation distance explains the trade-off using Minecraft, and the idea carries across directly.

Hytale rewrites its own settings files while it runs, which is why the stop matters. An edit made to a live server can simply be overwritten. Hytale server settings, operators and whitelist covers the rest of the file, and the same stop-edit-start routine applies to all of it.

What else is actually using the server

How spread out players are. Ten players in one town share most of their loaded area. Ten players exploring in ten directions each load their own, and the server pays for all of it. Busy exploring sessions are heavier than the same group at home, which is why a server feels worst on the night everyone sets off somewhere new.

Brand new terrain. Generating land nobody has visited is more expensive than loading land that already exists, so the first weeks of a world are the most demanding it will ever be.

Your player cap. MaxPlayers in config.json costs nothing until people turn up, and then every player is another loaded area. Set it to what your community needs rather than to the biggest number you can imagine.

Mods and plugins. Each plugin and asset pack adds its own overhead. A couple of small ones barely register, and a large content pack or a plugin doing work every tick can dominate everything else, so the count matters far less than what they do.

How many worlds you run. Hytale gives each world its own main thread and shares a pool of extra threads for parallel work, so a quiet world does not have to wait on a busy one. It still costs memory to keep several loaded, so a world nobody plays in is worth taking off the server rather than leaving in place.

Finding the mod that is costing you

If the server used to be smooth and is not since you added something, work through it rather than guessing.

  1. Take a backup.
  2. Press Stop, then on the Files tab move the most recently added file out of mods, and start the server.
  3. Play a normal session. If it is smooth, that was your answer. If not, repeat with the next one.

Two Early Access specifics worth remembering. A mod built for a previous build can misbehave rather than fail cleanly after an update, so re-check your list after every patch. And the Console tab is where a struggling plugin usually gives itself away, often as the same warning repeated hundreds of times, which is both a symptom and a cost. Installing mods and plugins on a Hytale server covers updating and removing them safely.

Scheduled restarts

A restart clears memory the server is no longer using and resets anything that has drifted during a long uptime. On a game that is still changing every few weeks, it is the cheapest maintenance there is.

  1. Open Scheduled tasks in the server menu.
  2. The Restart every night starter sets one up at a quiet hour in one click. For your own timing, click New schedule, choose Daily and pick an hour when nobody plays.
  3. Leave Skip if the server is offline ticked so it does not switch on a server you turned off.
  4. Choose Restart the server and create it.

Warning players first is kinder on a busy server, and the Warn players, then restart starter does it for you. Setting up an automatic daily restart has the detail.

When more RAM is the answer

Add memory when the evidence points at memory:

  • The console shows OutOfMemoryError, or the server stops when several players are online.
  • The server freezes or restarts when players explore new ground.
  • Lag that goes away with fewer people on, and that did not improve when you lowered the view radius.

How much RAM a Hytale server needs has the sizing. Your server's memory limit is set from your plan automatically, so there are no Java flags to edit: change the plan, restart, and it uses the new amount. Billing is prorated and your files stay where they are.

When more RAM is not the answer

If memory sits comfortably below the limit and the server still stutters when things get busy, the limit is processing power rather than memory, and a bigger memory figure changes nothing. The fixes then are a lower view radius, fewer heavy plugins and a smaller player cap.

Common questions

What is the best view distance for a Hytale server?

There is no single right answer, but many owners settle around 12 chunks, and going above 16 gets expensive quickly. Lower it first when the server struggles, because it costs nothing and the loaded area grows with the square of the radius.

Does adding RAM make a Hytale server faster?

Only when memory is what it was short of. More memory fixes out-of-memory crashes and slow saves, and does nothing for stutter on a server that already has memory spare, where the limit is processing power instead.

Why does my Hytale server lag when we explore?

Because generating terrain nobody has visited is the heaviest work the server does, and several players exploring in different directions multiply it. It improves once an area has been generated and saved, and it is always worst on a new world.

Should I run several worlds on one server?

You can, and Hytale gives each world its own main thread so a busy one does not hold up a quiet one, but every loaded world costs memory. Keep the worlds your community actually plays in and take backups before removing any of them.
